What is oregano oil?

Oregano oil is an essential oil extracted from the leaves of the Oregano (Origanum vulgare). Oregano is a perennial herb that grows along the Mediterranean coast, in North Africa and West Asia. Oregano oil has a strong herbal aroma and its main chemical components are carvacrol and thymol, both of which have powerful antiseptic and antioxidant properties.
Oregano oil is extracted through the leaf area by high pressure steam distillation, allowing the essential oils in the plant to be released. We recommend using Oregano oil in a diffuser, or mixing it with a carrier oil and applying it topically. However, you should not take it directly orally.
Because essential oils are highly concentrated chemicals, they are far more concentrated than plant extracts in the daily diet. Taking essential oils orally may cause irritation or harm to the body because of the high concentration.
Also, essential oils are chemically very complex and some of their components may be harmful to the body. Taking essential oils orally may cause adverse reactions to these components in the body.
